In a heartwarming development for the endangered mountain gorilla population, twin infants have been born to mother Mafuko in the lush forests of Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This remarkable event, witnessed by park ranger Jacques Katutu, has raised cautious optimism among conservationists working tirelessly to protect this remarkable species.

Twin births in mountain gorillas are exceptionally rare, and the newborns face significant survival challenges. Katutu, the head of gorilla monitoring in Virunga, expressed both the joy and responsibility he felt upon seeing Mafuko cradling her fragile offspring. “Watching Mafuko holding two babies was both moving and filled me with responsibility, given the twins’ extreme vulnerability,” he said.

The park’s rangers are closely monitoring the mother and her twins, observing their nursing and overall health. While the initial signs are promising, with the infants appearing calm and maintaining good contact with Mafuko, the first few weeks will be critical. Mountain gorillas have high rates of infant mortality, with approximately a quarter falling victim to disease, trauma, or even infanticide.

This latest birth is a significant milestone in the remarkable conservation success story of the mountain gorilla. Just decades ago, the species teetered on the brink of extinction, with barely 250 individuals left in the 1970s. Intensive conservation efforts have since seen the population surpass 1,000, leading to the subspecies being downgraded from “critically endangered” to “endangered” by conservation authorities.

However, the challenges facing the mountain gorillas remain immense. The DRC section of the Virunga mountain range is one of the most dangerous places in the world for wildlife rangers, with over 220 killed in the past 20 years due to the presence of rebel groups, militias, and bandits.

Despite these threats, the resilience of the mountain gorillas is exemplified by Mafuko’s story. She lost her own mother to an attack when she was just four years old, yet she has gone on to give birth to several young, including the latest set of twins.

As the park rangers and conservationists closely monitor the newborns, they remain cautiously optimistic. Allowing Mafuko to care for her babies naturally and minimizing intervention is the priority, according to Katutu. “Initial observations show that they are calm and maintain good contact with their mother. Their behaviour is consistent with newborns in a good condition, while remaining very vulnerable.”

The arrival of these rare mountain gorilla twins in Virunga National Park is a glimmer of hope in the ongoing battle to protect this endangered species. With continued vigilance and conservation efforts, the future of the mountain gorillas may yet be secured.
