In a strategic move to expand its presence across the UK, budget supermarket giant Lidl has announced plans to open 19 new stores over the next eight weeks. This ambitious expansion project will create 640 new jobs nationwide and aims to provide greater food retail choice for local communities.
The latest development in Lidl’s growth strategy involves the submission of a planning application for a new store in Leeds, located just a stone’s throw away from an existing Sainsbury’s supermarket. The proposed “state-of-the-art” Lidl store will feature a bakery, a 1,529 square metre sales area, customer toilets with baby changing facilities, and 161 standard car parking spaces, along with 12 accessible bays, nine parent and child spaces, and two rapid electric vehicle charging points.
“The proposals involve the redevelopment of existing retail units to provide a state-of-the-art new Lidl store with associated access & serving arrangements, parking and landscaping,” the company stated. “The new Lidl store will provide greater food retail choice for local people and will complement the existing community centre and public house at Moor Allerton District Centre.”
In addition to the Leeds development, Lidl has announced plans to open 19 new stores across various locations in the UK, including Wiltshire, Yorkshire, London, Birmingham, Reading, Nottinghamshire, and Hereford. This strategic expansion is part of the company’s commitment to delivering the best experience for customers and creating a positive impact on the communities it serves.
“We’re starting the new year as we mean to go on, with a major investment that reinforces our commitment to delivering the best experience for customers and creating a positive impact for the communities we serve,” said Richard Taylor, Chief Real Estate Officer at Lidl GB. “With this push, we’re set on winning more shoppers across the nation and claiming an even bigger share of the market.”
The public is invited to provide feedback on the proposed Leeds store before the planning application is submitted to Leeds City Council. All comments on the plans must be made by Monday, January 26, 2026.
