Silence and Compliance: The Growing Retreat from Climate Action Under Trump

As Donald Trump embarks on an aggressive campaign to dismantle environmental protections, a troubling silence echoes among Democrats, billionaires, and climate activists. Critics are voicing concern that the absence of pushback against his pro-fossil fuel agenda has emboldened climate deniers, leading to a concerning climate of acquiescence.

The Assault on Climate Science

During a recent conference in Zurich, climate denier Marc Morano expressed his disbelief at the lack of resistance from key stakeholders in the climate debate. “Billionaires are silent. Democrats in Congress have been silent. Climate activists. There has been no pushback on this,” Morano stated, highlighting a growing sense of complacency in the face of Trump’s environmental policies.

Experts are alarmed by the dismantling of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which was once a cornerstone of climate science in the United States. Robert Brulle, an environmental sociologist at Brown University, remarked, “The Trump administration just marched in and destroyed the crown jewel of climate science in the United States.” The administration’s actions signal a troubling trend as it seeks to eliminate the 2009 “endangerment finding,” which established that greenhouse gas emissions pose a threat to public health.

Retreating from the Climate Agenda

Since taking office in January 2025, Trump has aggressively rolled back climate-related initiatives. His administration has slashed funding for climate research, curtailed weather forecasting organisations, and published reports that undermine established climate science. In a particularly striking move, the Department of Energy, under Trump’s appointee Chris Wright, has restricted the use of terms like “climate change” and “sustainability” in its renewable energy department.

Retreating from the Climate Agenda

The Democratic Party, meanwhile, appears to be retreating from robust discussions on climate action. Internal debates have emerged regarding whether prioritising affordability is more politically advantageous than addressing the climate crisis. Despite polling indicating that 63% of Americans believe climate action should be a priority, Democratic representatives have largely refrained from vocalising their commitment to environmental issues.

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, however, has pushed back against this trend. “Anyone who cares about what fossil fuel pollution is doing to Earth’s natural systems needs to ignore these so-called ‘climate hushers,’” he asserted.

The Silence of the Tech Giants

Morano also pointed to the recent shifts among prominent tech figures like Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, who have seemingly abandoned their previously ambitious climate commitments. Both leaders have faced scrutiny for their companies’ increasing reliance on fossil fuels to power their AI operations. Gates notably published a memo downplaying the urgency of climate change, advocating for a focus on direct humanitarian aid instead of climate funding.

The media landscape, too, has changed. Morano observed that journalists are less aggressive in confronting Trump’s fossil fuel policies, leading to a noticeable decline in climate-related reporting. The absence of pushback from the press has allowed Trump’s administration to proceed with its agenda largely unchecked.

A Global Retreat on Climate Dialogue

The trend of silence surrounding climate issues is not confined to the United States. At the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, discussions around climate change were markedly subdued compared to previous years. Anjali Chaudhry, a business sustainability researcher, noted that the polarised political climate in the US has led many leaders to avoid the topic altogether.

A Global Retreat on Climate Dialogue

While many world leaders have also shied away from discussing climate change, public sentiment remains clear. A significant 89% of people globally support climate action, although many underestimate the level of concern among others, which perpetuates a cycle of silence and inaction.

Why it Matters

The lack of vocal opposition to Trump’s environmental policies poses a serious threat to global climate efforts. As climate deniers celebrate this silence, the consequences for public health and ecological stability could be dire. It is imperative for politicians, activists, and the media to reinvigorate the conversation around climate change and advocate for urgent action. The future of our planet hinges on breaking this cycle of silence and complacency.
