Daryl Hannah has unleashed a powerful critique of Ryan Murphy’s much-discussed series *Love Story*, which chronicles the romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. In a candid essay published in the *New York Times*, Hannah expresses her outrage over the portrayal of her character, played by Dree Hemingway, and the broader implications of how women are depicted in popular culture.

A Personal Attack?

The acclaimed actress, known for her roles in iconic films such as *Splash* and *Kill Bill*, has largely refrained from engaging with media narratives about her life. However, the release of *Love Story* has compelled her to speak out. In her essay, she describes the show as a “tragedy-exploiting television series” that not only misrepresents her but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes about women.

“I have generally chosen not to respond to media coverage of me,” Hannah writes. “But this recent portrayal, featuring a character using my name and depicted as irritating, self-absorbed, whiny, and inappropriate, was no accident.” She argues that the creators have distorted her image to create drama, calling the depiction “not even a remotely accurate representation.”

Misogyny in Storytelling

Hannah’s concerns extend beyond her own portrayal. She highlights a troubling pattern in storytelling that pits women against one another, often elevating one by demeaning another. “Storytelling requires tension,” she acknowledges, citing a producer’s comment that her character serves as an adversary. “But a real, living person is not a narrative device. Isn’t it textbook misogyny to tear down one woman in order to build up another?”

The actress vehemently denies the show’s insinuations about her character engaging in drug use, labelling these claims as false and damaging. “It’s appalling to me that I even have to defend myself against a television show,” she asserts. “These are not creative embellishments of personality. They are assertions about conduct – and they are false.”

A Family’s Frustration

Hannah’s essay follows a similar backlash from Jack Schlossberg, JFK Jr.’s nephew, who also condemned the series. In a recent CBS interview, Schlossberg remarked, “If you want to know someone who’s never met anyone in my family, knows nothing about us, talk to Ryan Murphy. The guy knows nothing about what he’s talking about, and he’s making a ton of money on a grotesque display of someone else’s life.”

In defence of the project, producer Brad Simpson maintained that *Love Story* was created with sincerity. Meanwhile, Sarah Pidgeon, who portrays Carolyn Bessette, acknowledged Schlossberg’s right to express his feelings about the series.

Record-Breaking Viewership

Despite the controversy, *Love Story* has achieved remarkable success since its February premiere, setting a streaming record for Disney. The first five episodes have amassed an impressive 25 million viewing hours, making it the most-watched limited series in FX’s history.

Why it Matters

Daryl Hannah’s critique of *Love Story* is more than just a personal grievance; it encapsulates a broader conversation about the representation of women in the media. As audiences increasingly demand authentic narratives, the backlash against shows like this highlights the responsibility creators bear in their portrayals. In an era where storytelling shapes perceptions, it is crucial that we challenge depictions that rely on outdated and damaging tropes, ensuring that all voices are respected and accurately represented.
