The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is the pinnacle of continental football, where the best players from across Africa compete for the ultimate prize. However, some of the game’s all-time greats have never managed to lift the coveted trophy. As the 2025 tournament unfolds in Morocco, we delve into the stories of five legendary players who fell short of AFCON glory.

Didier Drogba, the talismanic Ivorian striker, is undoubtedly one of the most iconic figures in African football history. During his illustrious career, Drogba led the Ivory Coast to the AFCON final on two occasions, in 2006 and 2012, but agonisingly fell short both times. Despite his goalscoring prowess and inspirational leadership, the elusive AFCON title always evaded him.

Another high-profile name on the list is Samuel Eto’o, the Cameroonian forward who is widely regarded as one of the greatest African players of all time. Eto’o’s trophy cabinet is filled with numerous domestic and European honours, including four La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League triumphs. However, the AFCON crown proved to be the one major title that eluded him during his distinguished career.

Ghanaian legend Michael Essien also finds himself among the players who never won AFCON. The dynamic midfielder was a crucial part of the Black Stars’ squads that reached the semi-finals in 2008 and 2010, but they ultimately fell short of the ultimate prize. Essien’s tireless performances and defensive contributions were instrumental in Ghana’s success, yet the AFCON trophy remained out of reach.

Likewise, Senegalese icon El Hadji Diouf, known for his flair and controversy, never managed to guide his national team to AFCON glory. Despite being a talismanic figure for the Teranga Lions, Diouf’s two AFCON final appearances, in 2002 and 2006, ended in heartbreak as Senegal were unable to clinch the coveted title.

Finally, the list includes the enigmatic Moroccan playmaker Hakim Ziyech. In recent years, Ziyech has established himself as one of the most talented midfielders in world football, plying his trade for European giants like Chelsea. However, his international career has been marked by near-misses, as Morocco have fallen short in their AFCON campaigns during his tenure.

These five players, each with their own unique stories and legacies, serve as a poignant reminder that even the greatest of talents can sometimes fall short of the ultimate prize in African football. Their unfulfilled dreams of AFCON glory have only added to the mystique and allure of the continent’s premier competition.
