Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, has received the green light to operate 41 methane gas turbines at its “Colossus 2” datacentre in northern Mississippi. These facilities are home to the company’s cutting-edge “AI supercomputers,” which are essential for operating Grok, xAI’s flagship AI tool. The approval comes at a time when the datacentre’s increasing energy demands have raised alarms among community members about the implications for local air quality.
Despite the technological advancements, the decision has not been met with enthusiasm. Public opposition has been fierce, with many arguing that the facility will exacerbate existing pollution problems in Southaven. “We are outraged,” stated Abre’ Conner, the NAACP’s director of environmental and climate justice. “MDEQ chose to bulldoze through a decision that silenced the very residents most harmed by it.”
Community Concerns and Environmental Impact
Since xAI activated Colossus 2 last year, residents have voiced serious concerns over noise and air quality, primarily due to the unpermitted turbines already in operation. At a recent public hearing held by the MDEQ in Southaven, hundreds gathered to express their discontent, with no attendees supporting the permit’s approval. Nathan Reed, a local resident, remarked, “The scale, the speed, the intensity of this expansion are unlike anything this area has absorbed. It was an industrial surge imposed on our residential community.”

The NAACP has since initiated legal action against xAI, alleging that the MDEQ rushed its decision and ignored the legitimate concerns raised by community members. “It’s shocking that a state agency and board would refuse to address an unnecessary civic crisis, prioritising convenience over justice,” Conner added, highlighting the feeling of betrayal among residents.
The Bigger Picture: Environmental and Health Risks
xAI’s Colossus 2 is not the only facility contributing to this controversy. The company established its first datacentre in Memphis in 2024, a vast complex known as “Colossus,” which is roughly the size of 13 football fields. There, Tennessee regulators allowed the installation of 15 gas generators last July, further complicating the environmental landscape.
Environmental groups have raised alarms about the emissions from xAI’s gas generators, which release fine particulate matter containing hazardous chemicals like formaldehyde and nitrogen oxides. Such pollutants are linked to serious health risks, including respiratory illnesses, heart attacks, and certain cancers. The already struggling air quality in the surrounding regions has earned both DeSoto and Shelby counties a failing grade from the American Lung Association, fuelling further anxiety in the community.
Patrick Anderson, a senior attorney at the Southern Environmental Law Center, voiced concerns about the regulatory process surrounding xAI, stating, “Mississippi state regulators appear to be more interested in fast-tracking xAI’s personal power plant than conducting a thorough review of its impacts and having meaningful engagement with the families that will be forced to live with this dirty facility.”
The Future of Datacentres and Energy Consumption
As xAI continues to expand its operations, it plans to construct a third datacentre in Southaven, ironically nicknamed “Macrohardrr.” The increasing reliance on such facilities raises important questions about the future of energy consumption and environmental sustainability in America.
