Freezing Rain Warnings in Effect
According to Global News meteorologist Ross Hull, even minimal ice accumulation can lead to substantial disruptions. “If that does happen, then you’re looking at an impact on infrastructure. So power outages, tree limbs falling and those types of things,” Hull explained. The freezing rain is particularly concerning for urban areas like Ottawa and Montreal, though regions further north may experience even more significant ice accumulation.
Hull emphasised the need for awareness, particularly in northern locales, where the effects of freezing rain could be exacerbated. He cautioned that residents should prepare for the possibility of power outages amidst cold conditions, as the expected temperatures will hinder ice melting. “The ice isn’t going to go… you often rely on milder weather to alleviate the icy conditions, but that won’t be the case here,” he noted.
Winter Storm Conditions in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean
In addition to freezing rain, the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean area is set to face harsh winter storm conditions. Forecasts suggest strong winds, alongside snow and ice pellets, will lead to significant accumulation. Residents can expect between 30 to 40 centimetres of snow by Thursday evening, contributing to treacherous travel conditions.
“The variability in what people will see is significant,” Hull remarked. As temperatures fluctuate and precipitation levels vary, conditions may differ markedly from one locality to another. This unpredictability necessitates that individuals remain vigilant and prepared for rapidly changing weather.
Potential Flooding Concerns in Southern Ontario
While freezing rain takes centre stage, southern Ontario is also bracing for heavy rainfall under a yellow warning. Environment Canada predicts that areas may receive 20 to 40 millimetres of rain. Given that the ground is either saturated or frozen, there is a heightened risk of flooding. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority has issued advisories urging the public to steer clear of rivers, shorelines, and trails, as well as to be cautious of pooling water on roads and in low-lying areas.
As the weather continues to unfold, Hull noted that travel disruptions could occur, particularly with planes needing to undergo de-icing procedures and roads requiring treatment. “We’re not done with the snow… which I know a lot of people are probably not happy about,” he stated, indicating that further snowfall may be on the horizon due to an incoming clipper system affecting parts of southern Ontario.
