On September 21, 2023, Longueuil police responded to a 911 call reporting a group of youths allegedly armed in a residential area. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain murky; according to the BEI, only the officer’s firearm was recovered at the scene. In addition to the weapon, police retrieved a baseball bat, a backpack, and ski masks, but no other weapons were found.
Controversy has arisen regarding the police’s actions post-incident. Documentation from the BEI reveals that it took 1 hour and 36 minutes for officers to notify the oversight agency about the shooting, during which time they conducted interviews with witnesses and sought video evidence. The BEI has stated that Longueuil police should not have been involved in investigating the shooting of a civilian by one of their own officers.
Longueuil police have defended their actions, asserting that both the delay and the investigative steps taken were reasonable given the circumstances.

Minister Lafrenière has committed to initiating an administrative inquiry, with a promise to launch a public inquiry if the situation demands it. Concurrently, Montreal police are conducting their own investigation into the events leading up to the police being called, following a request from the BEI just two days after the tragic shooting.
