Dr. Jeff Derevensky, director of the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviours at McGill University, warns that sports betting is becoming an epidemic among youth. He emphasised the pressing need for greater awareness of the issue, framing it as a matter of public and mental health, and calling for stricter regulations to combat the problem. “Advertising, accessibility, availability will breed more individuals with gambling problems,” he cautioned.
