This system treats the task of information gathering as a matching exercise, intelligently pairing anonymous accounts with their corresponding public profiles based on snippets of identifiable content.

The methodology involved using datasets from publicly accessible platforms like Hacker News and LinkedIn, as well as anonymised Reddit accounts split into two halves for the experiment. Remarkably, the AI model successfully identified up to 68% of matching accounts with an impressive accuracy rate of 90%. This level of effectiveness significantly surpasses traditional human-led investigations.

The authors of the study warn that governments could leverage AI to link pseudonymous accounts to real identities for surveillance purposes, targeting dissidents, journalists, or activists.
