As the British high street continues to face economic challenges, a new report reveals that dozens of major retailers and banks will be shutting their doors next month. According to the Centre for Retail Research, 54 retailers collapsed in 2025, resulting in the loss of 3,080 stores and 30,153 jobs.
The upcoming closures span a range of well-known brands, from budget shops to luxury retailers. Poundland is set to shutter seven stores across the country, including locations in Winton, Dorset; Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire; Chichester, West Sussex; Feltham, Greater London; Crayford, Greater London; Nottingham (Chilwell), Nottinghamshire; and Urmston, Greater Manchester.
Other casualties include Deichmann in Newbury Retail Park, Smiggle in Redditch, Worcestershire, and Lloyd in Thornbury, Avon. The list is further compounded by a wave of retailers that have already entered administration, such as The Original Factory Shop, LK Bennett, Claire’s, SilkFred, Fired Earth, Coopers of Beccles, Parravani’s Ice Cream, Roberts Bakery, Urban Legend, eBuyer, Bodycare, Baltic Bakehouse, and SOS Wholesale.
The closures come as businesses grapple with rising costs and shifting consumer habits, with an increasing number of people opting for online shopping and mobile banking services. Over 500 bank branches have also closed permanently due to this ongoing shift in customer behaviour.
Industry experts warn that the high street’s woes are far from over, with the potential for further consolidation and restructuring in the months ahead. As the UK economy navigates uncertain times, the fate of many beloved brands hangs in the balance, leaving communities across the country bracing for the impact.
