New Study Reveals Alarming Levels of ‘Forever Chemicals’ in Fetal Blood

Recent research from Mount Sinai has unveiled concerning findings regarding the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as “forever chemicals,” in umbilical cord blood. The study, which analysed 120 samples, discovered a staggering 42 distinct PFAS compounds, suggesting that fetuses may be exposed to these harmful chemicals at levels much higher than previously believed. This revelation raises significant public health concerns given the known adverse effects of PFAS on health.

Expanded Analysis Exposes Hidden Risks

Traditionally, tests on umbilical cord blood have focused on a limited number of PFAS compounds, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). However, the Mount Sinai study employed a comprehensive “non-targeted analysis” approach. This method allowed researchers to identify a broader spectrum of PFAS, revealing a higher cumulative concentration than earlier studies had reported.

Shelley Liu, an associate professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and co-author of the study, emphasised the importance of these findings. “It’s particularly crucial to understand because it is a very vulnerable period when fetuses are exposed,” Liu stated, highlighting the need for further investigation into the health implications of such exposure.

The Health Implications of PFAS Exposure

PFAS are a vast group of approximately 15,000 synthetic compounds commonly used in products designed to resist water, stains, and grease. Their persistence in the environment and the human body has earned them the moniker “forever chemicals.” These substances have been linked to a range of serious health issues, including cancer, developmental defects, immune system dysfunction, and chronic diseases such as kidney disease and high cholesterol.

The Health Implications of PFAS Exposure

Research indicates that fetuses are particularly susceptible to the harms of PFAS exposure. A comprehensive review encompassing 40 studies found PFAS in 30,000 umbilical cord blood samples, with elevated levels in maternal blood correlating with increased risks of infant mortality, low birth weight, and obesity later in life. Additionally, exposure during pregnancy has been linked to potential neurological and cardiovascular issues in children.

Regulatory Gaps and the Need for Action

Despite the growing body of evidence highlighting the dangers of PFAS, regulatory measures remain insufficient. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has traditionally tested for only 30 to 40 PFAS compounds in water samples, often overlooking thousands of others identified by independent researchers. This regulatory lag not only hampers efforts to understand the full scope of PFAS contamination but also poses significant risks to public health.

The Mount Sinai study’s findings underscore the inadequacies in current testing methodologies. While the EPA has recently approved a blood test examining 53 PFAS compounds—an improvement over previous efforts—this still leaves many potentially harmful substances unmonitored. Liu noted that their analysis identified 31 compounds absent from the EPA’s list, illustrating the gap in regulatory oversight.

David Andrews, acting chief science officer at the Environmental Working Group, commented on the implications of the study. “This paper is a stark reminder of the importance of health-protective regulations and how lax oversight can result in babies being born pre-polluted with harmful chemicals such as PFAS,” he said.
