A shocking case of homicide has gripped the town of Coleraine, County Londonderry, as a court heard the grim details surrounding the death of Wayne John Reid. The 43-year-old victim succumbed to blunt force trauma, with the murder weapon identified as an iron bar.

According to the evidence presented, the incident occurred on 12 January, when Reid’s lifeless body was discovered at a property in Society Court. A Coleraine Magistrates’ Court session on Monday revealed that the victim had made phone calls prior to his demise, naming the individuals responsible for the attack.

Darrell Joseph Shaw, a 33-year-old man of no fixed abode, has been charged with Reid’s murder and was denied bail. During the proceedings, a detective sergeant outlined the sequence of events, stating that the victim was seen leaving a flat in the early hours of 10 January, unsteady on his feet and with facial injuries, before “taking refuge” at the Society Court address.

The court heard that Reid had contacted two people to inform them about the incident, with one individual claiming that Shaw and three others were responsible for the assault. The other person provided details on the use of a weapon and named Shaw as well as another individual.

Prosecutors argued that the murder was the result of an ongoing dispute over drug debts and a vehicle. In a pre-prepared statement, Shaw denied the charges, stating, “I did not murder Wayne Reid.”

Opposing bail, the detective sergeant cited the defendant’s extensive criminal history, with 84 previous convictions, and expressed concerns that he posed a significant threat to the public if released.

The district judge, Austin Kennedy, agreed with the prosecution’s assessment, stating that Shaw was “clearly a danger to the public if released on bail.”

The investigation into Reid’s murder remains ongoing, with five other individuals, including a 30-year-old man and four women aged 19, 38, 39, and 45, still being questioned by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). The PSNI has been granted a court extension of an additional 36 hours to interrogate the 19-year-old woman.

The tragic loss of Wayne John Reid has deeply affected his friends, who were visibly upset during the court proceedings. As the community grapples with this shocking incident, the authorities continue their efforts to uncover the full truth behind this brutal crime.
