Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has delivered a stark warning to British parliamentarians, highlighting the increasingly dangerous alliance between Iran and Russia. Speaking to around 60 MPs and peers in Westminster, he described the two nations as “brothers in hatred,” underscoring the urgent threat posed by drone warfare in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Kamikaze Drones and Sanctions
Zelensky focused on Iran’s supply of Shahed “kamikaze” drones to Moscow, which have been used extensively against Ukrainian forces. He cautioned that easing sanctions on Russian oil would only serve to embolden Moscow, stating that it is “crucial” to maintain pressure on Russia amid rising oil prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East. The US has recently relaxed some sanctions in a bid to address these price hikes, a move Zelensky opposes.
The session was attended by notable figures, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and Defence Secretary John Healey, who all listened intently as Zelensky painted a picture of an interconnected global security landscape.
Sharing Military Expertise
In a compelling address, Zelensky connected the ongoing war in the Middle East to Ukraine’s struggle against Russian aggression. He emphasised that Ukraine is at the forefront of modern warfare, equipped with invaluable knowledge and techniques that could benefit its allies.
Currently, 201 Ukrainian military experts are in the Middle East, with an additional 44 on standby, ready to assist in defending against Iranian drone attacks. Zelensky expressed Ukraine’s willingness to extend similar support to its trusted partners, showcasing a proactive approach to international military cooperation.
During his presentation, Zelensky also demonstrated how Ukrainian forces are utilising technology to map Russian strikes and devise defensive strategies in real-time. He highlighted the innovative use of devices as simple as an iPad, noting that he presented one to King Charles III during a prior meeting, symbolising Ukraine’s respect and commitment to strengthening ties with the UK.
New Defence Partnership
Before Zelensky’s speech, Prime Minister Starmer reaffirmed the importance of maintaining focus on Ukraine despite the escalating situation in the Middle East. He stressed that Vladimir Putin should not gain from the Iranian conflict, whether through rising oil prices or the relaxation of sanctions.
In a significant development, both leaders agreed on a new defence partnership aimed at countering the threat posed by low-cost attack drones. This collaboration seeks to merge Ukrainian expertise with the UK’s industrial capabilities to manufacture drones and enhance military supplies. Additionally, Downing Street announced a £500,000 investment to establish an AI centre of excellence in Kyiv, further solidifying the partnership.
