A local mother has described her family’s harrowing ordeal after a massive 25,000-tonne illegal waste dump was discovered next to their home, sparking a devastating nine-day fire. Speaking to The Update Desk, the distraught parent recounted how the incident has transformed their once peaceful residence into a “prison”, forcing her young son to move out.

The distressing situation unfolded last year when authorities were alerted to the unauthorised waste site situated directly adjacent to the family’s property. An investigation quickly revealed the staggering scale of the illicit dumping operation, with an estimated 25,000 tonnes of refuse piled high on the neighbouring land.

Tragically, the towering heap of waste soon caught fire, engulfing the area in thick, noxious smoke for over a week. “It was absolutely horrific,” the mother, who wished to remain anonymous, told our reporter. “The smell was overpowering, and the smoke was so dense we could barely see outside. We felt completely trapped in our own home.”

The intense blaze and resulting fumes took a heavy toll on the family, particularly the couple’s young son. “My eight-year-old boy had to move out because the smoke was making him so unwell,” the distraught parent explained. “It’s been absolutely devastating for all of us. Our home has become like a prison – we’re scared to go outside, and we’re worried about the long-term health impacts.”

Local officials have condemned the illegal waste dump, describing it as a “blatant disregard for the law and the wellbeing of the community”. Enforcement action is currently underway, but the family says the damage has already been done.

“We used to love living here, but now it’s just a nightmare,” the mother lamented. “I just want my son to be able to come home and play in the garden without worrying about his health. This whole situation has been an absolute nightmare.”
