In a remarkable feat of community outreach, the food charity The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) has delivered nearly 100,000 meals to struggling families in Kirklees over the past year, saving them an estimated £740,000. This vital initiative has supported over 8,500 members in the borough, ensuring that “everyday essentials are affordable” for those facing the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

TBBT’s network of food hubs, located at schools, community centres, and church halls throughout the region, promote healthy eating, with 80% of their food packs consisting of fresh fruit, vegetables, and chilled produce. As a spokesperson for the charity explained, “Our hubs make nutritious, affordable food available while reducing waste and bringing communities together.”

In 2022, local volunteers contributed an impressive 17,907 hours to the operation of TBBT’s weekly sessions, with no referrals or crisis thresholds, ensuring that “anyone can join.” Councillor Beverley Addy, Cabinet Member for Public Health at Kirklees Council, praised the impact of the initiative, stating that “Kirklees residents who shop with The Bread and Butter Thing saved a combined total of over £741,000 in 2022 – a vital boost during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.”

Vic Harper, the chief executive of TBBT, highlighted the importance of the charity’s work, noting that “Amid rising costs, many households are only just keeping their heads above water, it only takes a small, unexpected expense to tip the balance.” She emphasised that the hubs in Kirklees provide a space for local families to “share ideas, access good food and support one another.”

The food hubs can be found in various locations across the borough, including Berry Brow, Crosland Moor, Cowlersley, Dalton, Deighton, Thornhill Lees, Chickenley, Heckmondwike, Liversedge, and Batley. Harper added, “We couldn’t do any of this without our brilliant volunteers, their dedication brings the hubs to life and makes a real difference.”

This data-driven, community-focused initiative by The Bread and Butter Thing has proven to be a lifeline for many families in Kirklees, providing access to affordable, nutritious food and fostering a sense of togetherness during these challenging times.
