In a significant move, Music Magpie, the leading provider of refurbished electronics, has struck a deal with retailer Timpson to allow customers to trade in their old smartphones at over 1,300 Timpson stores nationwide. This partnership follows a successful four-month trial period, offering customers a faster and more convenient way to unlock the value of their unused tech.

The tie-up between Music Magpie, owned by AO World, and the trusted Timpson network aims to address the widespread issue of smartphone apathy in the UK. According to a recent Census-wide survey, the total value of unused smartphones across the country is estimated to be around £10 billion, with nearly three-quarters of adults having at least one unused device at home.

“We know that apathy is the biggest barrier to trading in old tech, and the ability to ‘Take it to Timpson’ now makes it a no-brainer for customers who can get cash in only a few minutes for their old smartphone at over 1,300 Timpson sites,” said John Roberts, Chief Executive and Founder of AO World.

Customers can now simply hand over their phone at any participating Timpson store, have it assessed while they wait, and receive the funds transferred to them within minutes. This seamless process aims to encourage more people to unlock the value in their unused devices, while also promoting sustainability by keeping more tech in circulation.

“Adding Magpie to 1,300 Timpson stores across the UK is a huge milestone for us and will take our reach and convenience for customers far beyond anything we’ve tried before,” said Steve Oliver, Managing Director and Co-Founder of Music Magpie. “This partnership means that most people in the UK are now just minutes from turning their unused tech into hundreds of pounds of instant cash.”

The collaboration between Music Magpie and Timpson represents a significant step forward in making smartphone trade-in services more accessible and appealing to the British public. By combining Music Magpie’s expertise in refurbishment with Timpson’s trusted nationwide network, the initiative aims to address the growing issue of unused technology and provide a convenient solution for consumers to monetise their old devices.
