The Hockey Hall of Fame has officially incorporated the pucks used in the gold medal-winning goals for both the men’s and women’s hockey tournaments at the Milan Cortina Olympics into its permanent collection, thanks to a generous donation from the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). In a statement released on Wednesday, the Hall celebrated the significance of these artefacts following U.S. player Jack Hughes’s revelation that he had hoped to keep the puck from his overtime-winning goal as a memento for his father, Jim.
A Legacy Preserved
The Hall of Fame noted that these artefacts will be preserved, displayed, and shared with the global hockey community through its museum and outreach programmes. “These items are vital in ensuring that monumental Olympic and World Championship moments remain safeguarded and accessible,” the Hall stated, emphasising its commitment to honouring the athletes who create unforgettable memories on the ice. The U.S. team achieved a historic sweep at the Milan Cortina Olympics, winning gold in men’s, women’s, and Paralympic sled hockey, triumphing over Canada in each final—a first for any nation in the same year.
Megan Keller’s overtime goal for the women’s team, which similarly clinched gold, will also be enshrined alongside Hughes’s puck, marking a momentous chapter in hockey history.
Celebrating National Pride
Jamie Dinsmore, President and CEO of the Hockey Hall of Fame, articulated the importance of these donated items. He stated, “They represent defining moments on the world’s biggest stage and carry powerful stories of national pride and hockey history at its highest level.” The upcoming display for the 2026 Olympics aims to ensure that these remarkable Olympic moments are preserved for future generations to appreciate.

The Hall will showcase over 70 items, including a stick from American star Brady Tkachuk, gloves from teammate Jack Eichel, and jerseys from prominent players like Canada’s Sidney Crosby and Sweden’s William Nylander. Since the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, the IIHF has consistently provided the Hall with official pucks and other historic artefacts from each Olympic hockey tournament, including notable items like Sidney Crosby’s legendary 2010 “Golden Goal” puck.
A Commitment to Hockey’s Heritage
The Hockey Hall of Fame’s mission extends beyond mere preservation; it seeks to collect, research, exhibit, and promote artefacts, images, and narratives that are significant to the global legacy of hockey. Established to honour the sport’s history, the Hall recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to the game, ensuring that their achievements are remembered for years to come.
Why it Matters
The preservation of these Olympic pucks is more than a mere collection of sports memorabilia; it encapsulates the spirit of competition and national pride felt by players and fans alike. By safeguarding these artefacts, the Hockey Hall of Fame not only celebrates the triumphs of individual athletes but also reinforces the rich tapestry of hockey history that unites fans across the globe. This initiative ensures that future generations will continue to be inspired by the stories behind these defining moments in the sport.
