In a bold move, the US Mint has received approval for a 24-karat gold commemorative coin featuring the likeness of Donald Trump, set to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary on 4 July 2026. This decision follows a unanimous vote from the US Commission of Fine Arts, a body comprising members appointed by the former president himself earlier this year. Despite federal restrictions on depicting living presidents on currency, the Treasury Department has found a pathway to proceed with the coin’s design and production.
Unprecedented Approval Amidst Legal Constraints
The coin’s design was presented to the commission by Megan Sullivan, the acting chief of the Mint’s design management office. Notably, the Treasury Secretary holds the authority to permit the minting of specific commemorative coins, circumventing the usual legal barriers. Sullivan confirmed that Trump had personally approved the design, which showcases him in formal attire, leaning forward with a serious expression.
“It is my understanding that the secretary of the treasury presented this design, as well as others, to the president and these were his selection,” Sullivan remarked.

The obverse of the coin portrays Trump with his fists resting atop a desk, flanked by inscriptions that read “Liberty” and the years “1776” and “2026” in an elegant arc. The phrase “In God We Trust” is prominently displayed at the bottom, with stars decorating each side—seven on one and six on the other. The reverse side features an eagle in flight, alongside the phrases “United States of America” and “E Pluribus Unum,” further emphasising the patriotic theme.
Commissioner Chamberlain Harris, a prominent aide at the White House, defended the decision, stating, “I know it’s a very strong and a very tough image of him, and I think it’s fitting to have a current sitting president who’s presiding over the country over the 250th year on a commemorative coin for said year.”

While the Mint has received the green light to commence production, specifics regarding the coin’s size and denomination remain under discussion. Some commissioners have suggested that, given Trump’s penchant for the grand, a larger coin would be more fitting. Commissioner James McCrery II, known for his role in proposing a significant expansion to the White House, echoed this sentiment, saying, “I think the president likes big things.”
