A commuter train derailment near Barcelona has resulted in the death of the train driver and at least 14 injured passengers, according to local media reports. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening as the Rodalies train collided with a retaining wall that had fallen onto the tracks between the towns of Gelida and Sant Sadurní.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, with 11 ambulances now treating those injured. The local fire department has also dispatched 35 crews to the area, and had to rescue one passenger trapped inside the train. Several of the injured have been evacuated to nearby hospitals, including Moises Broggi, Bellvitge, and Vila Franca.

The severity of the passengers’ injuries is still being assessed by the emergency responders. This tragic incident comes just two days after another deadly rail accident in Andalusia, where two high-speed trains collided, resulting in at least 42 fatalities.

Heavy storms battering the northeastern region of Spain are believed to have been a contributing factor in the Catalonia derailment. Many coastal areas in the east and northwest of the country have been placed on high alert due to the extreme weather, which has also caused snowstorms in the Spanish Pyrenees and strong waves along the coast of Menorca.

Local authorities are now investigating the exact causes of the train crash near Barcelona. The incident has undoubtedly sent shockwaves through the region, as Spain grapples with yet another devastating railway accident.
