In a bid to alleviate traffic congestion around its terminals, Stansted Airport has announced a significant hike in drop-off charges for drivers. This new pricing structure, which takes effect immediately, will see fees rise for both short and long-term stops, as the airport seeks to manage the influx of vehicles and encourage greater use of public transport.
New Fee Structure
Under the revised policy, drivers who stop for 15 minutes or longer will now incur a charge of £28, while those who limit their stay to under 15 minutes will pay £10—a £3 increase from previous rates. Those lingering beyond 30 minutes face a hefty £100 Parking Charge Notice, which can be reduced to £60 if paid within a fortnight. Additionally, a £28 fee will be levied on vehicles that re-enter the car park within half an hour of their initial exit. Importantly, Blue Badge holders are exempt from these new fees entirely.
A spokesperson for Stansted Airport emphasised that these changes are designed to “manage congestion at the terminal and reduce ‘kiss and fly’ traffic,” which has been identified as a key contributor to the growing road congestion surrounding the airport.
Encouraging Public Transport Usage
The airport’s spokesperson further highlighted that they are operating under specific planning requirements aiming for at least 50 per cent of passengers to access the airport via public transport, with this threshold set to rise to 54 per cent as passenger numbers grow. To support this initiative, Stansted continues to offer a complimentary park-and-ride service for those willing to be dropped off a little further from the terminal. They also provide a discount scheme for local residents living within a 10-mile radius.
Comparison with Other Airports
Stansted’s decision follows similar adjustments made by other UK airports. Heathrow, for example, raised its drop-off charges from £6 to £7 in December, while also introducing a maximum 10-minute stay before incurring a £40 penalty. This charge has seen a dramatic 40 per cent increase since it was first implemented four years ago. Meanwhile, Gatwick Airport has upped its drop-off fee to £10, positioning itself as the most expensive in the country.
