In a surprising move, US President Donald Trump has unveiled his “Board of Peace,” a global club that requires countries to pay $1 billion in cash to join. However, this initiative has raised significant concerns among the international community, as it appears to be an attempt to displace the United Nations and establish Trump’s own imperial court.

The UN Security Council initially endorsed the Board of Peace in November, hoping it would help broker a ceasefire in Gaza. However, the details that have emerged in the past few days paint a very different picture. The Board’s charter portrays it as a permanent fixture aimed at promoting “peace and good governance” worldwide, with derogatory references to “failed institutions” – an apparent jab at the UN.

The charter grants the Board’s chairman, Donald Trump himself, extensive powers. He can select and terminate other members, decide when the Board meets, and issue resolutions unilaterally. This structure stands in stark contrast to the principles of the UN Charter, which emphasize non-aggression, self-determination, and the equal rights of nations.

Furthermore, the Board’s mechanisms for Gaza appear to be designed to displace UN agencies that have historically stabilized and rebuilt post-conflict societies, replacing them with profit-driven business ventures. The Israeli government has already expressed its opposition to any elements of the Board’s plan that would bring Palestinian governance back to Gaza or give other nations a stake in the territory.

Critics argue that the Board of Peace is a vanity project aimed at undermining the UN and subjugating member states to Trump’s vision of global governance – an “imperial court where vassal states pay cash and vie for the ear of the orange emperor.”

The international community now faces a difficult choice: join the Board and undermine the UN, or refuse and face the wrath of Trump’s “petty” retaliatory tariffs. Either way, the future of global peace and cooperation hangs in the balance as the world grapples with this latest power play from the Trump administration.
