Two pilots tragically lost their lives in a harrowing incident on Sunday evening at New York’s LaGuardia Airport when their Air Canada Express plane collided with a fire truck shortly after landing. The Jazz Aviation CRJ 900 regional jet, which was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members, struck the emergency vehicle that was responding to a separate emergency on the runway. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed the fatalities in a statement.

Incident Details

The pilots, identified as Antoine Forest, 30, from Coteau-du-Lac, and his co-pilot, were pronounced dead following the collision. Reports indicate that the jet arrived from Montreal and was built by Bombardier in 2006. As the plane touched down, it collided with the fire truck, which had been cleared to cross the runway. The impact was described as severe, with the aircraft hitting the vehicle at an approximate speed of 167 kilometres per hour.

In the aftermath of the crash, 39 passengers and two firefighters were transported to local hospitals, raising concerns about the extent of their injuries. Kathryn Garcia, the Port Authority’s executive director, noted that while 32 of the 41 injured had been discharged, nine remained in hospital with serious injuries. Fortunately, the two firefighters involved were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries.

Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitnesses aboard the flight recounted moments of chaos and confusion as the aircraft collided with the fire truck. Passenger Jack Cabot described the experience as a “slam,” with everyone aboard being thrown around inside the cabin. “It was chaos,” he recounted. Another passenger, Clément Lelièvre, credited the pilots’ quick reflexes for averting an even greater disaster. “Just as the plane touched down, the pilot braked extremely hard,” he explained, highlighting the pilots’ efforts to minimise the impact.

Reports from the scene indicated that passengers managed to evacuate through emergency exits, with some jumping off the wings onto the tarmac. Lelièvre himself sustained head and knee injuries but expressed gratitude for the pilots’ actions during the crisis.

Investigation Underway

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is sending a team to collaborate with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as investigations into the incident begin. Early analyses suggest that questions surrounding air traffic control procedures and the sequence of events leading to the collision are paramount. John Cox, CEO of Safety Operating Systems, remarked, “There’s going to be a real core question that the NTSB and Transportation Safety Board Canada will want to know,” referring to the clearance given to the fire truck while the Air Canada flight was on rollout.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the families of the victims. Meanwhile, the Air Line Pilots Association has dispatched critical incident teams to support both investigators and the affected families during this difficult time.

Industry Reactions

In the wake of this tragic event, aviation safety has come under scrutiny, with experts noting that runway incursions, while uncommon, remain an area of concern. Professor Geraint Harvey from Western University highlighted the high-pressure environments in which air traffic controllers operate and the potential for tragic outcomes when multiple factors align unfavourably.

Jazz Aviation, which operates the Air Canada Express service, expressed its deep sadness over the loss of its pilots and committed to supporting the families and employees affected by the crash. Doug Clarke, the airline’s president, emphasised the importance of coming together during such an incredibly challenging time.

Why it Matters

This tragic incident underlines the critical importance of aviation safety and the need for rigorous protocols to prevent runway incursions. With the aviation industry already facing heightened scrutiny following a series of incidents, this crash will likely reignite discussions about air traffic control practices and pilot training. As the investigations unfold, the aviation community, regulatory bodies, and the public will be watching closely, all hoping for answers that can help prevent future tragedies.
