The Ottawa Senators continued their impressive ascent towards playoff contention with a narrow 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Monday night. Shane Pinto opened the scoring with a power-play goal, while Warren Foegele netted his fifth goal in just nine games since joining the team. This win marks Ottawa’s third consecutive triumph, leaving them just two points shy of the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with 12 games remaining in the regular season.

Rangers Struggle Offensively

The Rangers had a night to forget offensively, managing a mere nine shots on goal—a statistic that ties for the lowest in franchise history, previously set in 1955. This performance exemplified their struggles at home, as they recorded their 25th loss in 34 games at Madison Square Garden this season. Despite the lack of offensive firepower, New York’s goaltender Igor Shesterkin stood tall, stopping 31 shots and preventing a larger deficit.

Conor Sheary managed to break through the Senators’ defence, ending James Reimer’s shutout bid with a goal on the Rangers’ seventh shot, but it was not enough to turn the tide. The Senators’ defence, already stretched thin, faced further challenges as injuries piled up during the match.

Injury Concerns for Ottawa

Ottawa’s victory came at a cost, as two more defencemen succumbed to injuries. Thomas Chabot suffered a right arm injury from a stick blow by J.T. Miller in the dying moments of the first period. Lassi Thomson, who was making his first NHL appearance since November 25, 2022, left the game in the second period due to a lower-body issue. This left the Senators with just four defencemen to complete the match, further complicating their defensive strategy.

Adding to their woes, Ottawa was already without Jake Sanderson due to an upper-body injury and Nick Jensen, who is recovering from knee surgery. The Senators are now in a precarious position but have shown resilience, winning 14 of their last 19 games since January 25.

Milestone for Zibanejad

On a positive note for the Rangers, Mika Zibanejad celebrated a significant milestone during the match—his 1,000th regular-season game. A pre-game ceremony featured a heartfelt video narrated by his wife, Irma, and the presentation of a silver stick, along with a mini replica for their daughter, Ella. Zibanejad, who spent his initial 281 games with Ottawa, received warm applause from both Senators and Rangers fans alike.

Why it Matters

This victory is crucial for Ottawa as they navigate a challenging path towards the playoffs, particularly amid mounting injuries. With the team rallying around its remaining players and showcasing a formidable spirit, they have positioned themselves as serious contenders in the Eastern Conference. As the season winds down, every point counts, and the Senators’ ability to adapt under pressure will be key to their postseason aspirations.
