A devastating drone strike on the El-Daein teaching hospital in East Darfur has resulted in the loss of 64 lives, with an additional 89 individuals injured, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). The attack, which occurred on 20 March 2026, has sparked international outrage and concern regarding the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan.

Attack on Medical Facilities in Sudan

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs expressed its horror at the assault on a healthcare facility, highlighting the tragic toll on innocent lives, including children and medical staff. The Sudanese rights group, Emergency Lawyers, identified the perpetrators as the national army, stating that the drone strike was part of a broader campaign against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which dominate the western region of Darfur.

The WHO confirmed the incident, noting that it affected a secondary health care facility, along with medical personnel, patients, and vital supplies. While the WHO tracks and verifies attacks on healthcare, it refrains from assigning blame, as it lacks the mandate of an investigative body.

Context of the Conflict

El-Daein, the capital of East Darfur, has increasingly become a battleground in the ongoing conflict between Sudan’s army and the RSF. The army has been relentlessly targeting the city in an attempt to reclaim territory from the RSF, pushing them back towards their established strongholds in Darfur. Earlier this month, a separate strike on the marketplace set ablaze oil barrels, illustrating the pervasive violence that civilians endure daily.

Drone strikes have become a recurrent feature of this brutal conflict, with recent reports indicating that attacks have resulted in the deaths of over 200 civilians within just eight days. UN human rights chief Volker Türk condemned the growing reliance on advanced drones, which are used to unleash explosive weaponry in densely populated areas.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The war in Sudan has produced catastrophic humanitarian consequences, with tens of thousands dead and over 11 million people displaced. The UN has described the situation as the largest displacement and hunger crisis globally, with more than 33 million individuals requiring urgent humanitarian assistance.

Since the onset of hostilities, attacks on healthcare facilities have plagued the nation, with the UN reporting over 1,800 fatalities linked to such incidents, including 173 health workers. In 2026 alone, there have been 12 recorded attacks on health care, resulting in 178 deaths and 237 injuries. The repeated targeting of hospitals underscores the urgent need for accountability and protection of medical facilities in conflict zones.

Why it Matters

The tragic events in East Darfur highlight the dire consequences of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, where civilians bear the brunt of military aggression. The systematic assault on healthcare not only endangers lives but also exacerbates an already critical humanitarian situation. The international community must respond decisively to protect vulnerable populations and uphold the sanctity of medical facilities, which are meant to provide care, not become targets of warfare. The world’s attention is essential to push for an end to this violence and to restore hope for peace and stability in Sudan.
