A new UN report reveals a staggering decline in migratory fish populations, prompting urgent calls for conservation measures to protect these vital species. An alarming study highlights that over the past fifty years, freshwater migratory fish have faced an 81% drop in numbers, largely due to habitat destruction, pollution, and overfishing. Historical examples, like the recovery of the saiga antelope following concerted anti-poaching initiatives, serve as a hopeful precedent for migratory fish. Amy Fraenkel, UN Executive Secretary for the Convention on Migratory Species, acknowledged the need to shift focus to these often-overlooked aquatic species. “It’s time for migratory freshwater fish to receive the attention they deserve under the convention,” she stated.
