In a devastating turn of events, a car crash involving Anthony Joshua, the renowned British boxer, has resulted in the tragic deaths of two of his close friends and team members. The incident occurred on the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway in southwest Nigeria, where Joshua was travelling to visit his relatives for New Year celebrations.
According to the reports, the accident happened on 29th December when the Lexus SUV Joshua was travelling in collided with a stationary lorry. The driver of the vehicle, 46-year-old Adeniyi Kayode, has now appeared in court, facing charges of causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid licence.
Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The former heavyweight champion himself was treated in the hospital for his injuries and was discharged two days later.
In a heartfelt tribute posted on Instagram, Joshua expressed his deep sorrow, writing: “I didn’t even realise how special they are. I’ll just be walking with them and cracking jokes with them, not even knowing God kept me in the presence of great men.” He further acknowledged the immense grief felt by the families of his late friends, stating, “100% it’s tough for me, but I know it’s even tougher for their parents.”
Kayode, the driver, was previously released on bail of 5 million naira (approximately £10,000) after being charged with the aforementioned offences. During his court appearance on Tuesday, the case was adjourned until 25th February to allow the prosecutor more time to seek legal advice.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the boxing community, with Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, paying tribute to Ghami and Ayodele, describing them as “deeply missed” members of Joshua’s team.
As the investigation into the crash continues, the boxing world and Joshua’s fans alike mourn the untimely loss of two individuals who were integral to the champion’s success and well-being. This devastating event serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety, especially for those in the public eye.
