Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Saudi Arabia, seeking to bolster security in the Gulf region through Ukraine’s advanced drone technology. This visit comes on the heels of his assertion that enhanced drone capabilities could significantly contribute to global security, particularly in areas reliant on stable energy supplies.

Upon his arrival, Zelensky expressed appreciation for the support from nations willing to collaborate on security matters. “Important meetings are scheduled. We appreciate the support of those who are ready to work with us to ensure security, and we support them too,” he stated via social media. In a video address to the Joint Expeditionary Force, a security coalition that recently convened in Helsinki, Zelensky elaborated on the importance of drone technology. In an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, he articulated this need, stating, “We would like Middle Eastern states to also give us an opportunity to strengthen ourselves.”
Several Ukrainian drone manufacturers have indicated that they have received inquiries from Gulf nations regarding potential partnerships. However, these companies are awaiting formal approval from the Ukrainian government before proceeding with any exports. Notably, Kvertus, a firm specialising in anti-drone electronic warfare systems, confirmed interest from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait but acknowledged that political considerations must guide any commercial agreements.
The Role of the US
Recent media reports have suggested that the United States may contemplate reallocating military supplies originally destined for Ukraine to the Gulf amid escalating tensions with Iran. The Washington Post cited Pentagon sources indicating that the ongoing conflict with Iran has led to a depletion of critical munitions, making the establishment of drone capabilities in the Gulf even more vital for Ukraine.
In response to inquiries about this potential arms diversion, President Trump remarked, “We do that all the time. Sometimes we take from one, and we use for another.” This statement underscores the fluid nature of military support and the strategic recalibrations that are taking place in light of regional conflicts.
