Hundreds of graphic images leaked to BBC Verify have provided a harrowing glimpse into the devastating human cost of Iran’s violent suppression of anti-government protests. The photographs, taken at a morgue in South Tehran, reveal the bloodied, swollen and bruised faces of at least 326 victims – including 18 women – killed during the government’s brutal crackdown.
Many of the victims were too disfigured to be identified, with 69 labelled as “John” or “Jane Doe” due to the unknown nature of their identities. Labels on over 100 victims showed their date of death as 9 January, one of the deadliest nights for protesters in Tehran so far.
The images, which are too graphic to publish without censorship, paint a disturbing picture of the government’s ruthless response to the nationwide demonstrations that have rocked Iran since late December. Protesters have taken to the streets, chanting slogans against the Supreme Leader and the Islamic Republic, in the face of a severe internet blackout imposed by the authorities.
BBC Verify has analysed 392 of the leaked photos and was able to identify 326 individuals. However, sources claim the true death toll at the morgue runs into the thousands. One source, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the “level of devastation” they encountered, with victims ranging from 12 or 13 years old to 60 and 70-year-olds.
“It was just too much,” the source said, recounting the harrowing scene of family members and friends huddled around a screen, desperately trying to identify their loved ones as hundreds of images flicked across.
The leaked photos provide a small window into the scale of the government’s crackdown, which has been extremely difficult to document due to the internet blackout. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has acknowledged that several thousand people have been killed, but has blamed the US, Israel and “rioters” for the unrest.
Despite the challenges, a small number of people have managed to share information and footage from the protests. Verified videos show burnt-out cars left in the streets and the sound of gunfire echoing around Tehran. Human rights activists estimate the current death toll to be over 4,000.
The chilling images from the morgue serve as a stark reminder of the human tragedy unfolding in Iran as the government continues its ruthless suppression of the protest movement.
