A troubling E. coli outbreak has emerged in the United States, linked to raw cheese produced by Raw Farm in California. The outbreak has affected nine individuals across three states, with a concerning number of those infected being children under five years old. As health officials investigate, the potential implications for public health and food safety are significant.

Overview of the Outbreak

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified Raw Farm as a “likely source” of the E. coli outbreak. Of the nine reported cases, seven occurred in California, while Florida and Texas each reported one case. The strain identified, E. coli O157:H7, is particularly dangerous, with three individuals requiring hospitalisation. One of these cases has progressed to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe condition that can lead to kidney failure.

Health authorities have been monitoring this situation closely; the illnesses have been traced back to a period spanning from September 2025 to February 2026. Genetic testing has revealed similarities among the bacterial samples from those affected, indicating a common source of infection.

Previous Health Concerns at Raw Farm

Raw Farm is no stranger to health-related controversies. In December 2024, the farm was implicated in an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu that affected several cats in the Los Angeles area, resulting in the death of two animals. This has raised alarms about the potential for cross-species transmission of pathogens, as cats share cellular receptors with pigs that can facilitate the mixing of avian and mammalian influenza viruses.

Furthermore, Raw Farm was linked to a significant salmonella outbreak in 2024, which infected at least 165 individuals—marking one of the largest such incidents in over a decade. The farm’s track record has led to increased scrutiny from health officials and consumers alike.

Current Response and Recommendations

In response to the recent outbreak, Raw Farm’s president, Aaron McAfee, has stated he will not initiate a voluntary recall of products unless presented with definitive evidence linking the cheese to the illnesses. Despite ongoing investigations, no Raw Farm products have tested positive for E. coli to date, and the FDA has not issued a mandatory recall. However, the agency has advised the farm to voluntarily remove its cheese products from retail shelves.

“Out of 81 samples we tested from retail stores, all were negative. If I had any concern, I would have issued a voluntary recall,” McAfee asserted in an interview with NBC News. Meanwhile, the FDA’s investigation continues, with an on-site inspection being conducted and an outbreak advisory issued to alert consumers, restaurants, and retailers about the situation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also weighed in, urging consumers to refrain from eating the implicated cheese while the investigation is ongoing. They recommend thorough cleaning of any surfaces or utensils that may have come into contact with the cheese to mitigate risk.

Public Health Implications

The emergence of this E. coli outbreak raises significant questions about food safety regulations and the oversight of raw dairy products. With children being disproportionately affected, the situation is particularly alarming. The incidents linked to Raw Farm underscore the potential health risks associated with raw milk and cheese consumption, especially given the history of foodborne illness connected to this producer.

As investigations unfold, it is crucial for consumers to remain vigilant and informed about the products they choose to consume, particularly those that have been flagged by health authorities.

Why it Matters

This outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in ensuring food safety in the United States. The case of Raw Farm highlights the vulnerabilities within the raw dairy sector and the need for stringent regulatory measures to protect public health. With children at the forefront of this outbreak, it is imperative that both consumers and health officials remain proactive in addressing the risks associated with raw dairy products. The repercussions of such incidents extend beyond the immediate health concerns, potentially eroding consumer confidence in food safety and regulation.
