As the world eagerly awaits the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, a political storm has erupted, threatening to overshadow the excitement of the tournament. At the heart of the controversy is the French government’s stance on whether to boycott the event in response to Donald Trump’s threats against Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.
The French Sports Minister, Marina Ferrari, has made it clear that the government is not in favour of a boycott. “As it stands now, there is no desire from the ministry for a boycott of this great competition,” she stated. Ferrari emphasized the importance of keeping sports separate from politics, describing the World Cup as “an extremely important moment for those who love sport.”
However, the issue has divided political opinions within France. Éric Coquerel, a senior far-left French politician, has called for the US to be stripped of its co-hosting duties, arguing that “one cannot imagine going to play the World Cup in a country who attacks its ‘neighbour’, threatens to invade Greenland and rides roughshod over international law.”
The debate has also extended beyond France’s borders, with veteran coach Claude Le Roy, who guided Cameroon to the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations title, suggesting that African teams should consider boycotting the World Cup in response to Trump’s actions.
The German government, on the other hand, has distanced itself from the decision-making process, stating that “Decisions on participation or boycotts at major sporting events lie solely with the competent sports associations, not with politicians.”
Amid the political tensions, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has maintained a close relationship with Donald Trump, even creating a special “FIFA Peace Prize” that he awarded to the US President at the World Cup draw in December 2025.
As the world watches the developments unfold, the question remains: will the political issues surrounding the 2026 World Cup overshadow the spirit of the game, or will the unifying power of football prevail?
