In a significant development at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) and the World Economic Forum have announced the establishment of the ‘Abu Dhabi Centre for Frontier Technologies’. This new centre will be based in the UAE capital and will focus on driving innovation in critical areas such as quantum computing, robotics, space technology, and related artificial intelligence applications.

The announcement underscores Abu Dhabi’s growing prominence as a global hub for advanced technological research and development. The centre will leverage the emirate’s robust infrastructure, talented workforce, and strategic location to spearhead breakthroughs in these transformative fields.

“The creation of the Abu Dhabi Centre for Frontier Technologies is a testament to the UAE’s commitment to positioning itself at the forefront of the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” said Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary-General of the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), which oversees TII. “By partnering with the World Economic Forum, we aim to accelerate the development and deployment of transformative technologies that will shape the future of our society.”

The new centre will work closely with the World Economic Forum’s Network of Centres for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, a global initiative that brings together governments, businesses, and academia to address the challenges and opportunities presented by emerging technologies. This collaboration will enable the Abu Dhabi hub to tap into a wealth of expertise and resources from around the world.

“The UAE has demonstrated its ability to foster innovation and drive the adoption of cutting-edge technologies,” said Børge Brende, President of the World Economic Forum. “We are excited to partner with the Technology Innovation Institute to establish this new centre, which will undoubtedly contribute to the global dialogue on the responsible development and deployment of frontier technologies.”

The Abu Dhabi Centre for Frontier Technologies will focus on several key areas, including:

Quantum Computing: Researchers at the centre will explore the potential of quantum computing to solve complex problems and revolutionise fields such as cryptography, materials science, and financial modelling.

Robotics: The centre will investigate advancements in robotics, automation, and autonomous systems, with a view to enhancing efficiency, safety, and productivity across various industries.

Space Technology: The hub will leverage Abu Dhabi’s strategic location and expertise to drive innovations in space exploration, satellite technology, and space-based applications.

Artificial Intelligence: The centre will study the integration of AI with these frontier technologies, seeking to unlock new possibilities and address global challenges.

By establishing this cutting-edge research and development hub, Abu Dhabi is solidifying its position as a global leader in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The collaboration with the World Economic Forum will undoubtedly accelerate the emirate’s efforts to shape the future of technology and innovation.
