Next-Generation Hydropower on the Horizon

The Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC), a leader in the development of submersible hydroelectric systems, is set to launch its first urban project on the St Lawrence River in Montreal. This initiative, expected to commence later this year, will deploy two hydroelectric devices that promise to tap into the river’s consistent flow, potentially generating between 60 to 90 megawatts of power in the region alone.

The recent approval of electricity rate hikes in western New York, coupled with rising costs in Michigan and Ohio, underscores the urgency for alternative energy solutions. ORPC’s approach, while modest in scale compared to the massive energy requirements of data storage centres, offers a reliable 24/7 electricity resource.

Davies noted the critical role of their technology, especially in times of grid failure, stating, “If the grid goes down for some reason, that river still runs. You’re going to have that level of emergency power.” This reliability positions ORPC’s innovations as a valuable asset in the evolving energy landscape.

Environmental Considerations

Despite the promising prospects of hydropower, the deployment of turbine technology in natural waterways has raised environmental concerns. Critics, including Anne KC McCooey of the Black Rock Riverside Alliance, advocate for a balanced approach that prioritises ecological integrity. “Responsible, sustainable energy sources need to be encouraged,” she stated, urging caution to prevent detrimental impacts on wildlife and local ecosystems.

ORPC maintains that its systems have operated without reported harm to aquatic life in Alaskan waters, where they have been providing renewable energy to communities since 2019. However, the challenge remains to address environmental apprehensions as the technology expands across the Great Lakes.

Innovations in Hydrokinetic Energy

Research and development in hydrokinetic energy generation are being propelled by academic institutions, with projects like the Vivace technology spearheaded by the University of Michigan. This system, designed to harness energy even from slow-moving water, offers versatile applications, from powering buoys in the ocean to potential large-scale implementations.

The absence of saltwater in the Great Lakes presents a significant advantage; it mitigates corrosion issues common in ocean-based systems, thus enhancing longevity and lowering overall costs. Furthermore, ORPC is exploring projects along the lower Mississippi River, indicating a broader ambition to diversify its hydropower initiatives.
