In a shocking incident, an Amazon delivery driver was caught on camera picking up and walking away with a Yorkshire family’s pet cat. The cat, named Nora, has a heart condition and requires medication, leaving the owners deeply concerned for her wellbeing.
Carl Crowther, a 53-year-old maintenance worker, had been expecting a package on Monday, 19 January, but had to leave his home around 2:30 pm. Upon reviewing the footage the next day, Crowther was devastated to see the driver “come right up to the door, pick up the cat, turn around and walk off” with Nora.
According to Crowther, the driver appeared to be going about his normal routine before spotting the cat and seizing the opportunity to take her. “He doesn’t get a response at the door as no one was in, so he looks for somewhere safe to put the parcel,” Crowther explained. “He then clocked the cat.”
The family is “really worried” for Nora’s safety, as she is not accustomed to new environments and “always stays very close to home.” Crowther said they were “devastated” when they saw the footage, describing it as “total shock and disbelief.”
Crowther has pleaded for the swift return of Nora, as she requires medication for a heart murmur. The incident has been reported to West Yorkshire police, who have recorded a “crime of theft” and are conducting ongoing inquiries.
However, Crowther has expressed disappointment with Amazon’s response, stating that the company’s “response was disgusting, asking what monetary value we’d put on the cat.” He emphasised that “you can’t put a value on somebody’s pet.”
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the company is investigating the incident and has been in touch with the police. This disturbing case highlights the need for heightened awareness and accountability when it comes to the treatment of pets, especially in the context of delivery services.
