In a bold display of diplomatic resolve, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has vowed that Britain “will not yield” to pressure from US President Donald Trump over the future of Greenland. Addressing the House of Commons, Starmer rebuked Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on the UK unless it agrees to his demands to acquire the Danish territory.

Starmer’s comments come amid a deepening rift between the two allies, with Trump lashing out at Britain’s plans to cede the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. The US President had previously expressed support for the move, but has now branded it an act of “great stupidity” – a clear attempt to leverage the issue as a bargaining chip in the Greenland dispute.

Undeterred, Starmer stood his ground, declaring that the UK’s “principles and values” regarding Greenland’s future will not be compromised, even in the face of economic threats. “I will not yield, Britain will not yield on our principles and values about the future of Greenland under threat of tariffs,” the Prime Minister asserted.

The standoff over Greenland has escalated in recent days, with Trump refusing to rule out the use of military force to seize the island. The US President has argued that Greenland’s acquisition is a matter of “national security,” a position that has drawn sharp criticism from Starmer.

In a scathing rebuke, Starmer accused Trump of deploying his comments on the Chagos Islands solely to “put pressure” on the UK over Greenland. The Prime Minister dismissed the US President’s change of stance as a transparent attempt to coerce Britain into yielding to his demands.

The deepening rift between the two allies has raised concerns about the future of the special relationship, with the Trump administration ramping up its criticism of the UK’s plans for the Chagos Islands. US Treasury Secretary Scott Biegun accused Britain of “letting us down” by moving to hand over control of the strategically important Diego Garcia military base to Mauritius.

As the diplomatic standoff continues, Starmer has vowed to stand firm in defence of Britain’s principles, underscoring the UK’s commitment to upholding its values in the face of Trump’s unrelenting pressure.
