A British Columbia diver has unearthed a remarkable find beneath the surface of Saanich Inlet, capturing video evidence of ancient cloud sponges, previously believed to be extinct. Ryan Swan, of Be Sea Adventure, recorded the sponges in their natural habitat, shedding light on a species that plays a critical role in marine ecosystems.

Swan’s discovery occurred at Christmas Point, a location renowned for being one of the few sites globally where ancient cloud sponges can still be observed. Swan emphasised the importance of technical dive training, stating, “I had to take on technical dive training, which is an advanced type of scuba diving. So that helps you go beyond the limits of what recreational diving allows.”
This specialised training enables divers to employ advanced equipment and different gas mixtures, thereby extending their underwater explorations. Yet, it is only after this rigorous preparation that the true adventure begins.
Documenting a Rare Species
Swan documented his thrilling dive and shared the extraordinary footage on his YouTube channel, Be Sea Adventures. His aim is to showcase the beauty of scuba diving while highlighting the significance of marine life. “I want to really show scuba diving to the fullest and show what sea creatures are down there and how important they might be to the ecosystems,” he explained.

Swan elaborated on their importance, noting, “These species are an indicator species, so it’s about protecting the ecosystem that they support and the water quality that they maintain.”
