A section of the M1 motorway has been closed as firefighters battle to extinguish a blaze after a lorry burst into flames. Significant traffic congestion has been reported in the area, with motorists facing major delays.

The incident occurred on the northbound carriageway between Junction 14 (Milton Keynes) and Junction 15 (Northampton). National Highways, the government-owned company responsible for England’s motorways and major A-roads, has confirmed that the affected section has been closed to allow the emergency services to work at the scene.

Eyewitness footage from the area shows heavy traffic build-up, with vehicles at a standstill as the fire service tackles the burning lorry. National Highways has advised drivers to allow extra time for their journeys and to follow the designated diversion route if they are travelling in the vicinity.

According to the latest updates, the fire service is working to extinguish the blaze, and recovery operations are underway to remove the damaged vehicle from the carriageway. While one and two of the four lanes have been reopened, motorists are still likely to face delays as the situation is brought under control.

National Highways has stated that the closure is likely to remain in place for several hours, and they have urged drivers to plan their journeys accordingly and to check for updates before setting out. The cause of the lorry fire is currently unknown, but an investigation is expected to be launched.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for motorists to be vigilant and prepared for unexpected situations on the motorway network. As the emergency services continue their work, the focus will be on restoring normal traffic flow as soon as it is safe to do so.
