As Canada prepares to co-host the FIFA World Cup this summer, the excitement is palpable across the nation. FIFA has unveiled an ambitious tour, dubbed “Canada Celebrates,” which will showcase the spirit of the tournament with 38 stops in 34 cities from coast to coast. Kicking off on June 1 in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador, the tour aims to engage over 75 per cent of Canadians in the festivities leading up to the championship game on July 19 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

A National Celebration of Football

The unveiling of the Canada Celebrates tour is a significant step towards integrating the entire country into the World Cup experience. From Halifax, Nova Scotia to Whitehorse, Yukon, fans will have the opportunity to partake in a variety of activities designed to celebrate the beautiful game. “This really, I think, wraps up, sort of in a big hug, the diversity and the breadth and width of our country,” remarked Victor Montagliani, FIFA vice president and CONCACAF president.

The inaugural event will see Canada take on Uzbekistan in a friendly match in Edmonton, where the local community will be invited to join in the festivities. As the tour progresses, each stop will feature big-screen viewings of matches, interactive games, family-friendly activities, and a delightful array of food and music that encapsulates the essence of Canadian culture.

Building a Legacy for Future Hosts

Montagliani has expressed his belief that Canada Celebrates can set a precedent for future World Cup tournaments. “I think it’s something we could give as Canadians to the World Cup moving forward, where it’s a project that could be used in future World Cups,” he said. The initiative was part of Canada’s successful bid to host World Cup matches, a vision that has been in the making for over eight years.

With less than 70 days remaining until the tournament kicks off on June 11 in Mexico City and Guadalajara, the anticipation is building. Fans are already donning their World Cup gear, and Montagliani has noted a growing enthusiasm among the public.

The Road to the Tournament

Canada will commence its World Cup journey on June 12 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, followed by matches against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24 in Vancouver. Toronto will host six games, while Vancouver will see another seven matches. In preparation, work continues on B.C. Place Stadium and BMO Field, which will be renamed Toronto Stadium for the duration of the tournament.

Montagliani has remarked on the unique experience of hosting the World Cup on home soil. “To have them in your own country is almost a bit of an out-of-body experience,” he said, reflecting on the dedication and effort that have led to Canada’s achievements in international football.

Mobilising for the Big Event

As the tournament date approaches, both Toronto and Vancouver are refining their plans for fan events and logistical arrangements. The excitement surrounding the World Cup is evident, and local communities are gearing up to welcome visitors from around the globe.

Head coach Jesse Marsch is focused on preparing the team for this historic opportunity. “The beauty about the World Cup, it’s about a country,” Montagliani added. “I know that this country has always risen to the occasion in terms of big events, and this is going to be no different.”

Why it Matters

The Canada Celebrates initiative is more than just a series of events; it embodies a sense of national pride and unity as the country steps onto the world stage. By engaging citizens in the excitement of the World Cup, Canada not only showcases its cultural diversity but also lays down a marker for future host nations on how to celebrate football in a truly inclusive manner. This legacy will resonate beyond the tournament, fostering a lasting love for the sport and inspiring future generations of footballers and fans alike.
