As the countdown to the FIFA World Cup 2026 begins, Canada is set to embrace the excitement with an extensive celebration programme that will span the country from coast to coast. Announced this week, the “Canada Celebrates” tour will stop in 34 cities, including major hubs such as Vancouver and Toronto, from June 1 to July 19. The initiative aims to engage fans and communities, ensuring the spirit of the World Cup reaches over 75% of Canadians.

A Nationwide Festival of Football

The festivities will kick off on June 1 in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador, with a friendly match between Canada and Uzbekistan taking place in Edmonton. The tour’s finale will occur on July 19 in Brampton and Niagara Falls, coinciding with the championship game in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Victor Montagliani, FIFA vice president and CONCACAF president, emphasised the importance of inclusivity, stating, “This really wraps up…the diversity and breadth of our country.”

Over the course of the tour, fans can look forward to engaging activities such as live screenings of matches, family-friendly games, and cultural performances. “It’s a real festival of what football and community represent,” Montagliani noted, highlighting the unique Canadian flavour that will accompany the celebrations.

Building a Legacy Beyond 2026

The idea for a cross-country celebration has been part of Canada’s World Cup bid since it was proposed over eight years ago. Montagliani believes that “Canada Celebrates” can serve as a model for future World Cup hosts, showcasing how a nation can unite through sport.

As the tournament approaches, excitement is palpable. Montagliani recently observed fans donning World Cup attire in the streets and reflected on his recent visit to Mexico City, where the Estadio Azteca was grandly reopened. “To have these experiences in your own country is almost a bit of an out-of-body experience,” he remarked, acknowledging the hard work that has paved the way for Canada to host this prestigious event.

Preparations Underway in Key Cities

With less than 70 days until the tournament begins on June 11 in Mexico City and Guadalajara, preparations are well underway in Toronto and Vancouver. Both cities are currently enhancing their stadiums—B.C. Place and BMO Field, which will temporarily be renamed Toronto Stadium during the tournament. The final touches are being made for fan events and community engagement activities to ensure that the cities are ready to welcome visitors from around the world.

Canada’s first match will be against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12, followed by two more group-stage games in Vancouver against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24. Toronto is set to host six matches, while Vancouver will feature seven, making both cities pivotal to the tournament’s success.

Why it Matters

The “Canada Celebrates” initiative is more than just a series of events; it embodies the spirit of unity and pride that sports can foster. As Canadians prepare to welcome the world for the FIFA World Cup 2026, this celebration serves as a reminder of the nation’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement through football. It sets a precedent for future tournaments and showcases Canada’s capability to host international events, promising a legacy that extends well beyond the final whistle.
