In a concerning incident that underscores rising tensions within Toronto’s Jewish community, police have apprehended a suspect following a shooting incident at the Old Avenue Restaurant in North York. The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, has heightened fears of antisemitic violence in the city. Authorities have revealed that the newly established counterterrorism unit played a crucial role in the swift identification and arrest of the alleged perpetrator.
Swift Action After Gunfire
The shooting incident took place shortly after 1:28 a.m. when a gunman fired multiple rounds at the Old Avenue Restaurant before fleeing the scene in an SUV. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, the psychological impact on the local community is palpable. Chief Myron Demkiw, alongside senior police officials, confirmed that plainclothes officers were already present in the area as part of an increased police presence in response to previous antisemitic incidents.
“While there were no reported injuries, this kind of attack leaves a real impact on people’s sense of security and, in this case, particularly within Toronto’s Jewish community,” remarked Chief Demkiw. The quick response from law enforcement, aided by covert units, allowed them to apprehend the suspect, identified as Mohamed Mahdi, 35, of Brampton, within a short time frame.
A Response to Rising Antisemitism
The creation of the counterterrorism unit was announced just last month, amid growing scrutiny over a spike in antisemitic hate crimes across Toronto. Recent weeks have seen a notable increase in incidents targeting Jewish schools and businesses, coinciding with anti-Israel protests that erupted following the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent Israeli invasion of Gaza.
Chief Superintendent Katherine Stephenson highlighted that the police are examining the situation from all angles given the series of shootings targeting synagogues and Jewish-owned establishments. “It’s not lost on us that there has been a number of shootings in a short period of time that have been targeting synagogues and Jewish-owned businesses,” she stated.
Despite the seriousness of the attack, the charges laid against Mahdi do not include any terrorism-related offences, a designation typically reserved for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). As the investigation continues, Toronto Police are in consultation with national security investigators from the RCMP to determine if the shooting has any potential links to terrorism.
Community Concerns and Police Strategy
The incident has raised alarms across the Jewish community, particularly because this was not the first attack directed at the Old Avenue Restaurant. The police are taking steps to bolster security measures, including the deployment of heavily armed officers at religious sites throughout the city. Additionally, they have restricted anti-Israel protests from encroaching on Jewish neighbourhoods, aiming to create a safer environment for community members.
Superintendent Ryan Forde of the organized-crime squad noted that the increased police visibility during the Passover holiday was a strategic move, aimed at deterring potential violence. “This was an alarming incident involving the discharge of a firearm at a Jewish-owned business in our city, the second time this particular owner has been targeted,” he said, reinforcing the need for a robust response to protect vulnerable communities.
Why it Matters
The targeted shooting at the Old Avenue Restaurant is emblematic of the broader crisis of antisemitism that is sweeping across Canada and beyond. As communities grapple with fear and insecurity, the actions of law enforcement and the establishment of specialised units are critical in restoring a sense of safety. The swift apprehension of the suspect is a crucial first step, but it also highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and proactive measures to combat hate-driven violence. In a climate where such incidents are on the rise, the protection of minority communities must remain a priority for both law enforcement and society as a whole.
