The shooting incident took place shortly after 1:28 a.m. when a gunman fired multiple rounds at the Old Avenue Restaurant before fleeing the scene in an SUV. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Chief Myron Demkiw, alongside senior police officials, confirmed that plainclothes officers were already present in the area as part of an increased police presence in response to previous antisemitic incidents.
“While there were no reported injuries, this kind of attack leaves a real impact on people’s sense of security and, in this case, particularly within Toronto’s Jewish community,” remarked Chief Demkiw. The quick response from law enforcement, aided by covert units, allowed them to apprehend the suspect, identified as Mohamed Mahdi, 35, of Brampton, within a short time frame.

Despite the seriousness of the attack, the charges laid against Mahdi do not include any terrorism-related offences, a designation typically reserved for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
