In a highly anticipated event, the Calgary Zoo unveiled its newest resident, a 20-year-old polar bear named Yelle, on Wednesday. This arrival marks a significant moment for the zoo, as Yelle, weighing in at a robust 500 kilograms, steps into his new home following a period of quarantine. However, the future interactions with the current polar bear, Siku, will proceed cautiously, ensuring a harmonious integration between the two majestic creatures.

A Cautious Introduction

Yelle, who hails from Quebec and was born in the Netherlands, is making his presence known in the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo’s habitat. Zoo staff have laid out ample food to welcome him, observing as he eagerly explores his surroundings. Paul Woerner, the zoo’s animal care manager, shared insights into the careful approach being taken during this introduction phase.

“We have implemented visual barriers to help them acclimatise to each other’s presence,” Woerner explained. “They are aware of one another; they can smell and hear each other, and there are moments when they communicate.” Just the day before, the two bears caught sight of each other for the first time, a pivotal step in their gradual introduction process.

While the anticipation grows for their eventual cohabitation, zoo staff are prioritising a slow and steady approach to ensure both bears feel comfortable and safe.

Remembering Baffin

Yelle’s arrival comes nearly two years after the unfortunate death of Baffin, the zoo’s previous polar bear. Baffin’s passing was attributed to drowning, following an incident where Siku inadvertently injured him during playful interaction. Woerner reassured the public that the zoo has not made any significant changes to its practices following this event, citing that the circumstances were not a result of human error.

“We assessed the situation thoroughly and concluded that there was nothing we could have altered in our approach,” he stated, reinforcing the zoo’s commitment to animal welfare and safety.

The Arctic Ambassador Role

The Calgary Zoo has embraced its role as an Arctic Ambassador Centre since 2023, collaborating with Polar Bears International to raise awareness about the pressing challenges polar bears face in a rapidly changing environment. The zoo’s efforts focus on educating visitors about the impacts of climate change on Arctic ecosystems and the species that inhabit them.

Both Yelle and Siku represent not just the zoo’s conservation efforts but also the broader narrative of polar bears struggling for survival in the wild. With Yelle’s arrival, the zoo aims to further engage the public in meaningful discussions about preserving these iconic animals and their habitat.

Distinct Personalities

As Yelle settles into his new environment, early observations suggest a stark contrast between him and Siku. Woerner describes Siku as a bear that enjoys the comfort of his enclosure, particularly his deep plunge pool, which he often uses as a retreat. “He treats that area like his castle,” Woerner remarked.

In contrast, Yelle appears to be more of an extroverted presence, spending a considerable amount of time outdoors. “My first impression is that he’s a great old guy,” Woerner noted, highlighting Yelle’s engaging personality.

As the two bears acclimatise to one another, their differing demeanours may present an intriguing dynamic that zoo visitors will be eager to observe.

Why it Matters

The introduction of Yelle to the Calgary Zoo is not merely about expanding its resident population; it represents a broader commitment to wildlife conservation and education. By facilitating a careful integration process between Yelle and Siku, the zoo underscores the importance of understanding animal behaviour and welfare. Furthermore, the zoo’s role as an Arctic Ambassador Centre ties into global conversations about climate change and its devastating effects on polar bear populations. In welcoming Yelle, the Calgary Zoo not only enriches its own offerings but also contributes to a vital dialogue about the future of these magnificent creatures and their habitats.
