A historic moment for the space industry, SpaceX has successfully launched its 11th Starship rocket from Texas, marking a major step forward in the company’s plans to land Americans on the Moon by 2027. The launch, which took place on Monday evening local time, saw the Super Heavy booster return for a soft water landing in the Gulf of Mexico, while the Starship upper stage briefly reignited its engines in space before splashing down west of Australia.

According to acting NASA administrator Sean Duffy, this latest mission is “another major step toward landing Americans on the Moon’s south pole.” The successful test comes after a streak of failures earlier this year, with the last mission in August ending that run. Monday’s flight closely mirrored the previous one, deploying a batch of mock Starlink satellites and testing new heat shield tiles during the fiery return from space.

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has stated that the upgraded Starship prototype being prepared for future tests is “really the vehicle that could take humans to the Moon and Mars.” The company expects this iteration to fly by the end of this year or early next. A key focus is developing the capability for orbital refuelling, a complex process involving two Starships docking in orbit to transfer hundreds of tons of super-cooled propellant.

This latest milestone puts SpaceX at the forefront of the race to the Moon, with the company’s $3 billion contract under NASA’s Artemis program central to the US effort to return humans to the lunar surface for the first time since 1972. However, a panel of NASA safety advisers has warned that slow progress in developing the rocket’s lunar lander design risks setting back the Moon mission.

Sticking a test landing on the Moon’s rugged surface is another top priority for SpaceX, as the company continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in space exploration. With the powerful Starship as the centerpiece of Elon Musk’s vision to eventually send humans and cargo to Mars, this successful launch represents another significant step forward in the company’s ambitious plans.
