A tearful Liz Hurley has revealed that she was left “devastated” after discovering the Daily Mail publisher had allegedly tapped her phone lines and recorded her live telephone conversations. The 60-year-old actress became emotional while giving evidence in the High Court, where she was accompanied by her son Damian and supported by Prince Harry.
In her written testimony, Ms. Hurley stated: “The Mail’s unlawful acts against me involve landline tapping my phones and recording my live telephone conversations, placing surreptitious mics on my home windows, stealing my medical information when I was pregnant with Damian and other monstrous, staggering things.” She continued, “Above all, it was the discovery that The Mail had tapped the landlines of my home phones and tape recorded my live telephone conversations that devastated me.”
Ms. Hurley is one of seven claimants taking legal action against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) for alleged unlawful information gathering, including phone hacking and “blagging” private records. Prince Harry, who is also supporting the case, told the court that the media’s treatment of his wife Meghan has made her life “an absolute misery.”
In a frosty exchange with lawyers acting on behalf of ANL, the Duke of Sussex said that if he became suspicious of someone, “I would have to cut contact with this person.” He also described an article published in the Daily Mail in 2006 as “really disgusting,” stating that he was having private discussions with his brother, the now-Prince of Wales, at the time.
The trial, which is set to conclude in March, will resume at 10:30 am on Thursday. ANL strongly denies any wrongdoing and is defending the claims.
