In a recent study, researchers posed 50 medical queries to five major chatbots and found that nearly half of the responses were deemed problematic. Grok topped the list with 58% of its answers classified as erroneous, while ChatGPT followed closely behind at 52%, and Meta AI at 50%. These findings underscore a critical issue: while AI chatbots can simulate human-like conversation, they are not equipped to provide reliable medical advice.
The Perils of Misinformation
The research, conducted by experts from the University of Alberta and Loughborough University, examined a range of topics, from the efficacy of vitamin D supplements in cancer prevention to the safety of Covid-19 vaccines. Notably, the chatbots struggled most when addressing complex subjects such as stem cell therapies and nutritional queries. For instance, questions regarding the carnivore diet and its health implications yielded particularly unreliable answers.
The study revealed that only 32% of the citations provided by some AI chatbots were accurate, with nearly half being at least partially fabricated. This alarming statistic highlights the potential dangers of relying on AI for health-related information, especially when individuals may mistakenly trust the authoritative tone of these responses.
The Need for Oversight and Education
Given the limitations of AI chatbots—such as their inability to access real-time information or engage in ethical reasoning—the researchers called for stringent oversight and public education. They emphasised that while these tools can assist in disseminating health information, they should not replace professional medical advice or be used as standalone resources.
