A shocking undercover investigation by the BBC has unveiled a troubling trend of legal advisers exploiting vulnerable migrants, coaching them to fabricate claims of homosexuality to secure asylum in the UK. This revelation highlights significant loopholes in the asylum process, raising serious questions about its integrity and the motives of those involved.

Migration Under Pressure

The investigation reveals a burgeoning network of law firms and advisers charging migrants exorbitant fees—up to £7,000—to create fictitious asylum claims based on fabricated narratives of sexual orientation. Many of these migrants are individuals whose visas have expired, rather than those arriving through irregular means. This group now accounts for a staggering 35% of all asylum claims, with numbers exceeding 100,000 in 2025.

The BBC’s inquiry found that these advisers offer detailed instructions to migrants on how to produce fake evidence, including letters of support, medical reports, and even staged photographs. Alarmingly, the Home Office has responded to these findings, asserting that anyone found abusing the system will face severe legal consequences, including deportation.

The Tactics Uncovered

Undercover journalists posed as migrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh, seeking assistance in their applications for asylum. Their findings uncovered a disturbing willingness among immigration advisers to facilitate fraudulent claims.

One adviser boasted of 17 years’ experience in creating fake asylum applications and explicitly stated she could arrange for a client to claim they had engaged in sexual relationships with others. In another encounter, an adviser suggested that once asylum was granted, the reporter could bring his wife to the UK, who could then also claim to be a lesbian.

The investigation also revealed that some migrants were coached to feign mental health issues to bolster their claims, further complicating the already fraught asylum process.

Community Groups Complicit?

The investigation revealed that community groups, such as Worcester LGBT, have become embroiled in these fraudulent practices. Despite claiming to support genuine LGBT asylum seekers, many attendees at a recent event admitted to not being gay. The BBC’s undercover reporter recorded conversations indicating that individuals were openly discussing their intent to fabricate claims.

During these meetings, advisers offered to provide letters of support that could be used as evidence to strengthen asylum applications, further entangling these organisations in the web of deceit.

A Call for Action

The revelations have prompted outrage among politicians and advocacy groups alike. Labour MP Jo White has called for urgent investigations into the practices of these legal advisers, emphasising the need for systemic reforms to protect genuine asylum seekers. Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp described the situation as a “scam” undermining the asylum process, urging a complete overhaul to ensure that only those facing real persecution are granted asylum.

The Refugee Council condemned the exploitation of vulnerable individuals, insisting that those profiting from these fraudulent activities must be held accountable. As the Home Office vows to tighten regulations, questions remain about the effectiveness of current safeguards against such abuses.

Why it Matters

This investigation sheds light on a critical issue within the UK’s asylum system, revealing how vulnerable migrants are being manipulated by unscrupulous advisers. The findings not only threaten the integrity of the asylum process but also jeopardise the lives of those genuinely seeking refuge from persecution. As the government grapples with these revelations, the need for robust safeguards and ethical oversight has never been more urgent, ensuring that the system serves its intended purpose of protecting those in genuine need.
