In the aftermath of the loss, Rajakovic gathered his team for extensive discussions to pinpoint necessary adjustments. “We had long conversations last night and this morning about what the potential adjustments need to be,” he stated prior to their practice at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. “What do we need to clean up? What do we need to do better? There are a lot of those things. That’s very exciting because there is plenty of room for us to grow.”
Starting centre Jakob Poeltl echoed the sentiment, recognising the need for evolution as the series progresses. “At the end of the day, we know a playoff series requires some changes and adjustments. It’s just one game,” he remarked. “We didn’t play our best basketball. It’s not just about X’s and O’s; we need to bring the same determination we showed during the regular season.”
Key Areas of Concern
With a host of issues to address, Rajakovic and his players have identified three primary focus areas to improve their chances in Game 2:
1. **Increased Aggression from Ingram**: All-Star forward Brandon Ingram must elevate his shooting volume after managing only nine attempts, with a meagre one in the second half of Game 1.

Ingram acknowledged the benefit of the film sessions, stressing the importance of learning from their mistakes. “We had to see what their game plan was coming out of the first game, how they attacked us defensively to slow us down,” he explained. “I think we’ve got those answers now, so we can look at them and see how we can improve in practice.”
Defensive Struggles
Point guard Jamal Shead, making his playoff debut, voiced his frustrations regarding the team’s defensive execution. Despite finishing the regular season with the fifth-best defensive rating in the league, the Raptors struggled to maintain their usual standards. “I don’t think we tried a lot of coverages. There were many mess-ups. We just weren’t executing defensively like we should have, and that’s on us,” he said.
A significant factor in their defensive lapse was rebounding. The Cavaliers out-rebounded the Raptors 33 to 27, a statistic that, while not drastically skewed, highlighted a notable drop in performance from Toronto’s best rebounder, Scottie Barnes, who only managed one board after averaging 7.5 throughout the season. Rajakovic emphasised the need for Barnes to be more involved in rebounding, stating, “Our transition offence thrives when he’s pushing the ball. We have to ensure that he gets involved along with his teammates.”

As the Raptors prepare for Game 2, there remains uncertainty surrounding point guard Immanuel Quickley, who missed the first game due to a mild right hamstring strain. Quickley had a standout season, averaging 16.4 points and leading the team with 5.9 assists over 70 games, and his return could significantly bolster the Raptors’ chances.
