French President Emmanuel Macron has praised the unity displayed by European leaders in supporting Denmark’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, stating that this demonstrates the bloc’s strength when acting in a collective manner.
Speaking to reporters upon his arrival at the EU summit in Brussels, Macron emphasised that “when Europe is united, strong and reacts quickly, things return to normal and calm.” However, he cautioned that Europe must remain “vigilant” and continue to act in a “united manner,” showcasing its “instruments at its disposal” to command respect if threatened.
Macron’s comments come amid ongoing tensions between the EU and the Trump administration, with the French leader suggesting that Europe’s unified response to recent events has worked against the US President’s attempts to undermine the continent’s cohesion.
The French President also indicated that his country is open to participating in more NATO missions, potentially in the Arctic region, as part of Europe’s efforts to bolster its security and defence capabilities.
Macron’s remarks underscore the importance he places on European unity and the bloc’s ability to effectively counter external challenges, particularly in the face of an unpredictable and at times confrontational US administration under President Trump.
The EU summit in Brussels is expected to address a range of pressing issues, including the bloc’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing Brexit negotiations, and the EU’s relations with other key international players.
