In a striking shift within the cosmetic surgery landscape, breast reduction procedures and implant removals have surpassed breast enlargements for the first time, according to the latest findings from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS). This trend, highlighted in the 2025 annual audit, reflects a growing preference for comfort and practicality, particularly as more individuals adopt active lifestyles and favour athleisure wear.
A Paradigm Shift in Cosmetic Surgery
The BAAPS report reveals a notable decline in breast enlargement surgeries, which fell by 8% from the previous year to 4,761 procedures. In contrast, breast reductions rose to 4,673, alongside 847 implant removals, marking a significant change in the preferences of those seeking surgical enhancements. Surgeons attribute this trend to a cultural shift towards a more natural silhouette, prioritising functionality and comfort over exaggerated curves.
Nora Nugent, president of BAAPS, commented on these developments: “We are witnessing a pivotal moment where breast reduction and implant removal surgeries outnumber augmentations. This shift signifies a move towards silhouettes that align more closely with active lifestyles and the increasing popularity of athleisure fashion.”
Rising Popularity of Facial Procedures
The trend towards natural aesthetics is not confined to breast surgeries. The report also highlights a surge in facial procedures, with brow lifts experiencing a remarkable 27% increase. Other facial surgeries, including facelifts and eyelid operations, have also seen heightened interest. Dr. Anil Joshi, a consultant ENT and facial plastic surgeon, noted that patients are becoming more discerning. They prefer results that do not overtly signal surgical intervention, opting instead for enhancements that harmonise with their lifestyle.
“The focus has shifted from cup sizes to lifestyle,” Dr. Joshi explained. “Women are increasingly interested in how their choices affect their daily lives. This is reflected in the growing number of implant removals, which often signify a transition rather than a reversal of a previous decision.”
Labiaplasty on the Rise
The changing attitudes towards body image extend to labiaplasty as well, which has seen a 6% increase in procedures. Nugent points out that many patients, particularly older women, have only recently discovered labiaplasty as a viable solution for discomfort during physical activities. “With the rise of form-fitting clothing, such as gym wear, patients are becoming more aware of options that can alleviate discomfort,” she stated.
This trend underscores a broader societal awareness of women’s health issues and the desire for solutions that accommodate active living.
Men Embrace Facial Enhancements
Interestingly, the landscape for male cosmetic procedures is also evolving. For the first time, eyelid surgery has become the most popular choice among men, with 346 procedures performed—an 8% increase—while rhinoplasty has seen a decline of 18%, dropping to 273 procedures. This shift suggests a growing acceptance of cosmetic enhancements among men, particularly in facial aesthetics.
