An inquest held in Exeter has revealed the harrowing details of Janet Fordham’s five-year ordeal, during which she was defrauded of an estimated £1 million, culminating in her ill-fated journey to West Africa.
The Descent into Fraud
Janet Fordham, a 69-year-old retired housekeeper from Devon, became ensnared in a web of deceit spun by fraudsters across the globe, including the UK, Germany, the US, and Ghana. Over the years, she lost not only her life savings but also her home, leaving her vulnerable and desperate for a solution.
Her daughter-in-law, Melanie Fordham, recounted how Janet had first ventured into the treacherous waters of online dating in 2017, where she met a man claiming to be a British army sergeant major stationed in Syria. This supposed sergeant convinced her he needed her assistance to transport gold bars back to the UK, leading her down a path of financial ruin. “She said they were in love and were going to buy a house together,” recalled Melanie, who warned her mother-in-law about the potential dangers. Despite her pleas, Janet sent approximately £150,000 to the scammer, unaware that this was just the beginning of her financial nightmare.
A Dangerous Search for Redemption
As her ordeal continued, Fordham fell victim to multiple scams, including a con artist posing as a diplomat. “I think she realised that she had been scammed, but initially struggled to accept it,” Melanie explained, highlighting the psychological manipulation that left Janet vulnerable to further exploitation.
In a desperate attempt to reclaim her lost funds, Janet was contacted by a man in Ghana known as Kofi, who claimed he could help her recover her money. He portrayed himself as a doctor who had discovered her details while working in a phone shop. Believing in his assurances, she flew to Accra in October 2022, convinced she could salvage her financial future. Melanie noted, “She travelled with the intention and in the belief that she could retrieve some or all of that money,” despite the family’s efforts to intervene.
The relationship between Janet and Kofi quickly escalated, with Janet agreeing to marry him. However, this newfound hope would soon turn to despair.
A Fatal Turn of Events
On Valentine’s Day 2023, tragedy struck as Kofi drove Janet to meet a family member regarding their impending marriage. The car swerved and overturned, resulting in a fatal head injury for Janet, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Devon and Cornwall police determined no foul play was involved; however, Kofi admitted to a driving offence in connection with the incident.
Detective Sergeant Ben Smith highlighted the prolonged nature of Janet’s victimisation, stating that she had sent between £800,000 and £1 million to various fraudsters over several years. This prolonged financial exploitation had dire consequences for her living situation—she had sold her home and was residing in a caravan in Devon.
