The FBI has launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of former Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, who tragically passed away last May at the age of 65. The federal probe delves into Irsay’s alleged use of ketamine and other illicit substances, as well as his relationship with Dr. Harry Haroutunian, an addiction specialist who reportedly provided him with the drugs leading up to his untimely demise.
According to a Washington Post report, the FBI has requested information related to Irsay’s substance abuse history, his illegal and prescription drug use, and the nature of his association with Dr. Haroutunian. The federal grand jury subpoena was issued earlier this month, indicating the gravity of the investigation.
Irsay’s passing was initially reported as a peaceful death in his sleep, with the Colts organisation citing his “known health issues” after a fall in his home in December 2023. However, the Washington Post’s investigation has uncovered a more complex and tragic narrative.
The report suggests that Irsay had secretly relapsed and was receiving regular ketamine injections and opioid pills from Dr. Haroutunian in the final months of his life. Alarmingly, the newspaper found evidence that Irsay had suffered from drug overdoses on two occasions – once in his Indianapolis home in December 2023 and again 12 days later at a resort near Miami.
Dr. Haroutunian, who described Irsay as a “brother,” has defended his actions, stating that he “dedicated 18 months of [his] life to try to care for him” and did everything possible to make Irsay “as comfortable as possible.”
The FBI’s investigation into Irsay’s death comes on the heels of a similar federal probe into the fatal drug overdose of “Friends” star Matthew Perry. In that case, two doctors who had provided ketamine to Perry were federally charged and subsequently sentenced.
As the investigation into Irsay’s untimely demise unfolds, it sheds light on the complex and often tragic nature of addiction, even among high-profile individuals. The FBI’s probe is likely to uncover further details and raise questions about the role of medical professionals in managing such delicate situations.
